Nokia 6300

by admin on December 22, 2009

nokia-6300Nokia puts out a huge amount of phones every year, and not all of them are cheap phones. But every once in a while they come up with something outstanding, and the 6300 is one of those. It’s the first phone I ever heard described as an excellent tactile experience. People rave about how good it feels just to hold it, and that was good enough for me to try it.

The best thing about this phone is that it performs great as a phone. Sure it has a 2 mp camera and an mp3 player, but it’s mainly designed to handle calls, which is something I feel has been underrated lately. It’s great at getting and receiving calls, with excellent coverage and clear sound and its keyboard’s layout and keys make it also great for texting, in sum, it’s a phone for those of us who enjoy communicating.

The main problem about this phone is that it marks very easily, so you need to take extra care. It’s also not a phone you’ll want to drop very often but, then again, which is?

Choosing a mobile phone

by admin on October 13, 2009

mobileThere are many different types of mobile phone on the market, from phones that are simply phones to smartphones that can do almost everything that a PC can. When choosing a phone it is important to determine exactly what you will be using it for.

If you are a businessman then taking your office with you might be high on the priority list. A smartphone will enable you to receive email, type word and excel documents on the go and even stay in contact with people using an instant messenger service. Some smartphones come equipped with full mini style keyboards integrated into the phone itself. If you prefer something larger then you can also purchase roll up keyboards or even infra-red ones.

If you care more about keeping in contact with friends and sharing images then it is important to buy a phone that has a good camera. A lot of phones these days can nearly rival a decent SLR camera in terms of quality. With the advent of social sites such as Facebook and Twitter you can have pictures uploaded whilst you are on the go.

Finding the right phone can be difficult, check out the mobile phone deals at phones4u.co.uk for a better idea.

Devic to boost indoor coverage

by admin on May 29, 2009

As it’s first test trial of Femtocell technology, AT&T began selling the MicroCell, a device that increases indoor 3G data coverage, and boosts cellular service. The MicroCell, according to AT&T, will use a customer’s home Internet service to connect phones within the house to their network. Calls that originate on the device switches to the closest tower when the user leaves home. Calls starting outside can’t transfer to the MicroCell. Rival companies such as Sprint and Verizon have been offering Femtocell hardware as well, but come up short. AT&T’s device covers not only calls, but also 3G data activity. With a coverage range of over 5,000 square feet and up to 10 phone lines, they have the market cornered.

The trails of Femtocell technology began in Charlotte, North Carolina, and as of now AT&T is only selling the device in Charlotte. It is available for $150.

AT&T is currently the largest provider of local and long distance telephone services in the United States. It is also the second largest provider of wireless services in the United States, with over 77 million wireless customers out of 150 million total.

Intel Extends into Mobile Software

by admin on March 14, 2009

The widely known and popular PC chip manufacturer has recently stated that it is supporting an open-source operating system for cell phones and mobile devices. Their goal is to extend beyond it’s business of microprocessors and into software with their new OS called Moblin, which is short for “Mobile Linux”. Among other things, it will have a Firefox Fennec mobile browser, ‘widget’ based social networking applications, and panel-based navigation to browse through running programs.

Chief Executive Paul Otellini, at the Intel Developer Forum, flaunted the software that programmers can utilize to create application stores like the iPhone has. More competition for the market that Apple has so effectively cornered, and basically created.

Intel has said that it will let developers create applications that function on multiple platforms and various types of PCs using their processors. After all, Intel is the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker, and invented the x86 series of microprocessors which is found in most personal computers worldwide. They also make motherboard chipsets, network cards and Ics, flash memory, graphic chips and embedded processors among other things. With such a history and track record, we can only expect something great coming from Intel, no matter where they put their focus next.

T-Mobile and a 4g Service

by admin on February 20, 2009

Looking for the most affordable way to build nationwide networks, Germany’s Deutsche Telekom (the parent company of T-Mobile) is discussing possibly gaining access to spectrum to expand it’s 4G network. Clearwire and MetroPCS own airwaves that can host 4G networks, which means faster service for Web-enabled phones. Although, T-Mobile’s rivals such as Verizon and AT&T have already started to upgrade their systems, and T-Mobile themselves have not yet announced a 4G expansion plan. Sprint has also entered negotiations, already owning 51% of Clearwire.

Recent reports say that Deutsche Telekom was considering making a multi-billion-dollar offer to Sprint, in hopes that they would merge into a larger company to compete against Verizon and AT&T, rather than struggling separately. Sprint, the third-largest wireless service provider said it lost 257,000 subscribers and $384 million. T-Mobile is the fourth-largest, and has also lost revenue in the past years. Should these two companies merge, they will rival AT&T’s second-place spot with 78.2 million customers. T-Mobile is already an international success, operating under GSM and UMTS networks in both Europe and the United states, with mobile operators in both continents. Globally, they have 150 million subscribers, making them the eighth largest mobile phone service provider by subscribers.

HTC Hero Smartphone by Sprint

by admin on January 27, 2009

The Hero has also replaced the standard Android interface with it’s own, called the HTC Sense. The HTC Sense is a very customizable user interface, including ‘widgets’ like Twitter and Footprints. It also has improved Android devices such as Outlook e-mail, contacts and calendar synchronization. For multimedia, it features an impressive 5 megapixel camera, with zoom, autofocus, flicker adjustment, video recording and geotagging. A 3.5mm headphone jack, with side volume buttons for easy accessibility which is essential for music. For connectivity, it has Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, and 3G support. Not to mention a microSD expansion slot, for more memory that you’ll know what to do with.

As for aesthetics, the Hero doesn’t disappoint. With rounded corners and a smooth, streamline look, the design is nothing short of sleek. It’s also very compact, weighing on 4.5 ounces and being half an inch thick. Though the size doesn’t mean a small screen, it has a 3.2”, 480×320 resolution touch screen. And although it has a similar shape to the MyTouch 3G, the Hero is a higher quality phone.
